Mint Condition Gala

THE CAUSE

Gala Patrons will have the opportunity during our Cause Auction to contribute funds to help the Mint Museum of Craft + Design commission a spectacular site-specific clay art piece from British Ceramic Artist and 2011 Guest Artist Kate Malone, thereby making another step towards completion of Project Ten Ten Ten.*

“Bulbous, sensual, and luminous, the clay art of Kate Malone is unsurpassed in its reinterpretation of the botanical world, with biomorphic shapes and slick, luscious surfaces. An artist with a profound connection to nature, and a deep appreciation for historic ceramics, Malone’s inspiration comes from her worldwide travels, spending much time in India in particular, as well as her native England. Known for her generosity as a teacher, she is dedicated to sharing her knowledge and studio space with a broad range of international artists.”
Annie Carlano, Director of Craft + Design, The Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Mint Museum

Kate says, “I aim to be at the same time both very serious and quite silly, simple and clever, adult and child. My aim to broadcast a sense of optimism through my work to touch the emotions, the pleasure buttons of the spirit, and chase an instinctive use of positive symbolism. I am motivated by a fascination with clay and with nature. Transforming soft wet clay to fired hard ceramic, then to a shiny glazed surface is addictive.

Kate Malone was born in London in 1959; she studied at Bristol Polytechnic and received an MA in ceramics from the Royal College of Art. After graduating she set up a studio in London and has recently acquired a studio in the country. She has exhibited widely in London as well as internationally and is known for her large scale works and public commissions such as major additions to the courtyard of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital commissioned in 1994, and in 2005, the Children’s Library of the New Public Jubilee Library Brighton: Wall of a Thousand Stories comprising 91 wall pieces to be used for improvised interactive story telling.

Kate is represented by Adrian Sassoon and Clare Beck at Adrian Sassoon in London.

*Additional proceeds will enable the Founders’ Circle to support exhibitions and programs at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design.
