THE McCOLL AWARD: Vision + Generosity + Energy
The
McColl Award was established by the Founders’ Circle and the Mint
Museum of Craft + Design in 2000 as recognition for its first
recipient, Hugh McColl, Chairman and CEO of Bank of America. The
award recognizes the gifted vision, extraordinary generosity as well as
endless energy that are a pivotal force in the cultural community and
essential to assuring the success of the Charlotte-based Mint Museum of
Craft + Design as an internationally recognized venue for the
promotion, collection and presentation of craft art. The Founders’
Circle of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design takes great pride in
announcing the recipients of the 2011 McColl Award:
Susan and Loy McKeithen & The Charter Members of the Founders’ Circle

Susan and Loy are
Charter Members of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design and of its
national support affiliate, the Founders’ Circle. Since 1998, they have
been consistently and passionately involved with the growth, direction
and collections of MMC+D. They twice served as Gala Co-Chairmen,
in 2003 and again in 2006. Susan joined the Founders’ Circle
Board in 2003 and was President of the Board in 2008/2009 while
concurrently serving as the first Chairman of the new Craft Board of
the Mint Museum. |
Susan and Loy
appreciate all types of art and have been collectors for over twenty
years. They say that being involved with MMC+D and the Founders’
Circle provided them the opportunity to learn more, see more and gain
deeper appreciation for craft art, to travel in pursuit of craft and to
have fun with other craft lovers.
“We are
surprised and honored to receive the McColl Award and thank Founders'
Circle for presenting it to us. We accept it with humility
knowing that there is a long list of passionate and inspired McColl
Award winners before us. From the time we heard about plans for
the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, we wanted to be a part of making it
another jewel in Charlotte's crown. Founders' Circle was on the
forefront of making that happen, setting the bar for quality and
accomplishment in the field of contemporary studio craft. Thank
you for the support and friendship.”
For their vision
of the future of the craft arts in Charlotte, their generosity of time
and resources to support MMC+D and their ongoing energy and enthusiasm
for building the arts in Charlotte, especially MMC+D, The Founders’
Circle is honored to present Susan and Loy McKeithen this award at the
Mint Condition Gala, TEN YEARS OF CELEBRATION, March 12, 2011.
The Founders' Circle Charter Members
These
individuals, each of whom donated a piece of work as well as a cash
contribution before the opening of MMC+D in January 1999, have
left an indelible imprint on the Mint Museum of Craft + Design by
setting into motion a pattern of future donor giving. We honor
these individuals listed in An Inaugural Gift: The Founders’ Circle
Collection for their vision of the future of MMC+D, their generosity in
supporting this inaugural collection and their ongoing energy in
continuing to bring depth and excellence to the museum’s permanent
collection.
